THRACE. Augusta Traiana. Lucius Verus (AD 161-169). Æ (33mm, 17.34 gm, 8h). Struck under Quintus Tullius Maximus, Legatus Augusti pro praetore provinciae Thraciae. ΑΥ ΚΑΙ Λ ΑΥΡΗΛΙΟΣ ΟΥΗΡΟΣ, bareheaded, cuirassed bust of Verus right, seen slightly from rear / ΗΓΕ ΤΟΥΛ ΜΑξΙΜΟΥ ΑΥΓΟΥΣΤΗΣ, detailed city gate with arched entrance gate with closed doors and three turreted towers, each with arched openings, ΤΡΑΙΑΝΗΣ in exergue. Varbanov 920. RPC Online 10341. A magnificent architectural type, very rare and in extraordinary condition! Detailed portrait, choice green patina. Choice Extremely Fine. Founded by the Emperor Trajan on the border between Moesia Inferior and Thrace, Augusta Traiana was provided with a strong set of city walls which figure prominently on its coinage. This splendid large bronze provides architectural details of the city gateway, which included three tall crenellated towers, each with its own set of arched doorways and windows, flanking the central portcullis. Fortifications such as these, only rarely featured on Roman coins of the first and early second centuries, became far more prevalent as the Empire came under unceasing attack from circa AD 162 on; by the Tetrarchic era, the "camp gate" had become the dominant reverse type.
